Overview

Step into one of nature’s rarest spectacles on a guided backpacking adventure in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains. This unforgettable experience combines scenic mountain trekking, quality time in the backcountry, and intimate access to the magical display of the park’s world-famous synchronized lightning bugs.

Over the course of this carefully guided trip, you’ll hike through misty valleys, cross cool mountain streams, and camp beneath a canopy of towering hardwoods. Our experienced backcountry guides handle the logistics and teach essential outdoor skills along the way, from lightweight packing and trail navigation to campcraft and Leave No Trace principles, making it perfect for beginners and seasoned adventurers alike.

As dusk settles on your final evening, you’ll witness one of the most extraordinary natural light shows in North America. Deep in the forest, thousands of Photinus carolinus fireflies flash in perfect unison, waves of glowing light pulsing through the darkness like nature’s own heartbeat. It’s a fleeting, once-a-year phenomenon that few ever see, and even fewer experience from the solitude of the backcountry.
